Mon 11 July STACIE COLLINS BAND (usa) £10adv/£12 on door

STACIE COLLINS is blazing a trail travelled by few women. This harmonica blowin’ hell-cat sports a hard-core honky-tonk wail while backed by a slam-bang rock ‘n’ roll band. She blends Stones style fried rock-n-roll, gut bucket blues and vintage honky-tonk. She is based in Nashville and tours the US, Scandinavia and Europe regularly. There is even a  Japanese ‘Stacie Collins’ tribute band.

Her 2007 release, THE LUCKY SPOT was produced by the well-regarded producer Dan Baird (The Georgia Satellites / Homemade Sin). The record became a fans’ favourite and received world wide airplay. If it had been released twenty or thirty years ago would have sounded as natural on ’70s FM radio alongside ZZ Top and The Rolling Stones as it does next to contemporary rockers like the Drive by Truckers or Blackberry Smoke.

There have been several articles about Stacie – one writer wrote… “Stacie is a bad-ass gritty babe who takes no shit, honed her barstool feminism in road houses and honky-tonks and wails on a mean blues harp”. Another one credits her with being a leader in the Outlaw Country movement stirring in Nashville boasting “…Collins shows those plastic gals what real music is supposed to sound like”.

Fri 31st July SHERMAN ROBERTSON BAND (USA) + guests £12adv/£15

THE RETURN OF SHERMAN ROBERTSON: OR HOW THE KING OF LOUTEX WENT BACK TO HIS ROOTS

Sherman Robertson is back. Well in a sense he’s never been away, but a long absence from the European and blues scene – save for a few festivals – and a seeming enduring silence on the recording front have heightened the sense of absence. But now Sherman is set to roar back on to the boards with an extensive tour in late July onwards. As the man himself says “I felt I had got to the point where my blues wasn’t good enough for the blues fans and I wasn’t rocky enough for the Rock fans; so I headed home and rediscovered my Texas thing”.

Sherman is variously described; epithets range from ‘The King of Loutex’ (a unique Sherman brand of Lousiana swamp and Texas blues), or, more predictably, as the successor to Albert Collins as a “Master Fender bender”, to simply “the man with the plan”, or “the new kid from the old school.” Maybe it was the title of his 1993 album “I’m The Man’ that came closest to capturing his on-stage charisma and sense of self exuberance. It is 10 years since Sherman first blazed a trail on the UK concert circuit.  There have been highs and lows in intervening years included some throat problems and the curtailment his keyboard player Kim Foreman’s career due to arthritis. Such events would have derailed many performers, and it did take a while for Sherman to regroup, overcome some uncharacteristic self-doubt and hit the road again.
