RED BUTLER

LIVE BLUES INFO’SQ&A WITH FAST RISING UK BLUES ROCKERS RED BUTLER

The band Red Butler come from the Uckfield in East Sussex and have rocketed onto the blues scene with their debut EP getting airplay on  Radio 2’s Paul Jones Show. Bookings have been coming in thick and fast and last year the band was selected to play at Hyde Park as part of the prestigious Olympic celebrations. Following the great reception for the EP the group is now working hard on writing their first full length album. As well as touring this summer sees them play venues and festivals as far and wide as Colne Rhythm & Blues Festival, and Guernsey.

Alex of Red Butler answered our questions

Tell us what you’re up to musically at the moment?

We are very busy writing for our first full album which we are hoping to release later this year

How would you describe your musical style?

As a mixture of rock/blues/funk and soul

Who else is playing on the album?

Alex ‘Red’ Butler on lead guitar and backing vocals, Jane Chloe Pearce on lead vocals, Charlie Simpson on Drums, Steve Eveleigh on bass guitar + Will Wensley on keyboards

Who writes the material?

It’s a collaboration, so all four band members have an input

Your musical & lyrical influences?

Our musical heritage comes from a wide background.  Personally, I have interests in both modern and old music finding the raw delivery of pre-war blues to be particularly powerful whereas I also value the instrumentation and arrangements of modern blues. I think that evolution in music is essential whilst maintaining the true roots of the genre.

Where in particular do you draw melodic inspiration from?

I particularly like the gospel influences of Robert Randolph and the finesse of Robert Cray and Derek Trucks.

So what do you write about?

Jane is inspired by people of character and has an abiding interest in history.

Which song are you most satisfied with?

We are currently working on a piece about a man escaping from the cotton fields and slavery in Mississippi which we all feel is our strongest song to date.

What do you think is the future of the CD?

I think the CD will always be there as a source.  There is more satisfaction in buying a CD than downloading, which seems to be more about convenience.  Sleeve notes don’t come with a download!

Listening wise – favourite Saturday night music?

Live performances from a variety of styles to appreciate the live audience feel – that’s what Saturday nights are for!

Favourite Sunday morning music?

This one is a bit different – probably something more subtle or laid back either in the blues/soul genre or even flamenco and classical

What do you listen to  or sing – while in the bath

Nothing – I tend to watch documentaries or read whilst in the bath

Read any good books recently?

I enjoy reading escapist novels by writers such as Alistair MacLean and David Gemmell and biographies about influential musicians

All-time favourite book?

The Alchemist by Paulo Coelho

Stones or Beatles?

Stones

Curry or Chinese, or?

Thai

Freddie, BB, or Albert?

Albert

Football or Cricket?

Cricket if pushed, but ideal choice would be surfing or volleyball.

Left or right?

Left

Biggest issue facing the country today

The lack of art funding in schools would be high on my list

Biggest issue facing musicians

Keeping music live and the categorisation of music

Career highlight

It has been a busy year for the band -  being chosen to play at Hyde Park during the Olympics,  having a track from our debut EP on Paul Jones Radio 2 show and the inclusion in Classic Rock/Blues Magazine all feature in career highlights to date
